So, you keep searching best mic you can buy for streaming. After constant googling, you stumble upon Razer Seiren X. It’s not expensive, sold less than a hundred dollars and can be cheaper if there is a discount. It’s created by the famous gaming hardware company that every gamer know, Razer Inc.

Razer Seiren X uses a USB interface, so it’s easy to use and you don’t need to learn how to use XLR and spend more money on XLR equipment. But is Razer Seiren X really a good microphone for streamers? When every years new microphones are released by every company, should you buy  Razer Seiren X in 2021?

Razer Seiren X Overview

Razer Seiren X Physical Appearance and Technical Specification

Turning on Razer Seiren X

Razer built this microphone with aesthetics and functionality in mind. This mic was built-in compact form, with a diameter only at 50mm or 1.97 inches. Below the black microphone array, a volume dial to control volume, one-click mute button and Razer logo are cast on the mic. So from the outside, Razer Seiren X is not complicated and simple to use

This mic is equipped with a solid strong base and ball joint, so you can tilt this mic at around 25 to 30 degrees of tilt.  The bottom part of Razer Seiren X, the desk stand with a diameter at 90mm / 3.54 inches is lined with vibration and sound dampening foam which helps to reduce the background noise at the area near the stand. Usually, these sounds are table vibration, the sound of you typing your keyboard and clicking the mouse, which the sound that gamers and streamers most make. The Razer Seiren X has also a built-in shock mount inside the microphone array, as another vibration proofing, so background noise can be reduced to the minimum thanks to the smart engineering in this microphone.

Razer Seiren X have micro-USB port as the power cable which is disappointing because USB C have already become a standard and most smartphone already use USB C as its main port and micro-USB cable are starting to be forgotten. Buying a compatible micro-USB cable to USB A will be hard if you lose the cable. Luckily, the USB cable is sturdy, long enough at 1.8 m and equipped with a versatile wrapping band, so you can place and use this mic anywhere. This mic is also equipped with a 3.5mm audio jack so you can connect it to your headphone to check the sound you make on the mic.

With a height of around 18.4 mm/ 7.24 inches and a weight of less than 1 lbs / 400g, this microphone is small and compact enough to be easily carried everywhere and used as a portable setup for streamer and podcaster.

Just like others Razer products, Razer Seiren X is colored with the common Razer color, Black and Green. In case you’re tired of the usual Razer color, you can also buy this mic in other colors, Quartz Pink and Mercury White, with all of them have a good aesthetic and balanced design.

Using the Razer Seiren X

Razer Seiren X PC build

USB microphones are great for beginner streamer and podcaster. They are easy to use, just plug the USB cable into your USB port on your PC and install the driver. It’s simply plug-and-play, therefore USB mic are loved even among professional streamers. Once you connect this mic to your PC, Windows 10 will automatically recognize the mic. It’s also compatible with Mac operating system. To use the Razer Seiren X first you need to set the mic into the adjustable base, connect the micro-USB cable to the micro USB port on bottom part of the mic and type A USB cable to your PC USB port.

The Disadvantage of USB Microphone

Razer Seiren X have integrated soundcard so the analog to digital conversion is being done in real-time within the mic. It will always be worse than a real xlr microphone that is connected with a sound card. Budget sound cards can easily process 24 bit 96kHz audio.

But what about a USB microphone? Most USB microphones are limited to only a bit depth of 16 bit and a sample rate of 44.1kHz into 48 kHz. This number doesn’t matter for most people because high accuracy sound is only intended for professional recording purposes. Using expensive and premium microphones are only needed in film recording and song recording. And having a good mic is useless without a good sound system and room soundproofing that isolate outside noise on your studio room

So, if you’re just a beginner streamer or podcaster, what you only need is a mic that works and have enough quality. Mediocre sound quality can be easily be improved using software like Audacity (It’s free). Razer Seiren X offers a bit depth of 16 bit and a sample rate of Min 44.1 kHz/ Max 48 kHz. As a USB mic, it’s good enough. Most entry-level and budget USB mic that has a more expensive price, its competitor like Audio Technica AT2020+ USB have the same spec to Razer Seiren X. So, this spec doesn’t matter. It will be inferior to the real xlr mic, yes. But you need to save your budget if you’re just a beginner. You can upgrade your mic as you progress in streaming

Razer Seiren X is a Condenser Mic that have Supercardioid Pick-Up Pattern

Supercardioid sound pick-up pattern

Razer Seiren X is a condenser microphone with supercardioid as its sound pick-up pattern. Supercardioid is basicly an improved cardioid pattern with small structure modification, that will capture more noise at the front and less background noise from behind and the side of the mic. But even with this improvement, it’s still a Cardioid. It will pick up all the noise in front of it. It will pick up the keyboard noise, mouse click, your breathing noise, table vibration, even the traffic sound outside your house! Condenser microphone will also pick more noise than most dynamic microphones. Most budget and mid-range USB microphone is a condenser mic with a supercardioid pattern, so even if you buy Blue Yeti and Audio Technica AT2020+, it’s the same type as Razer Seiren X.

The good news is, it’s not hard to reduce the background noise that you can make as a streamer with a proper setup. Positioning matters and will make a big difference to your sound quality. Razer Seiren X must face your mouth at the front and at the back must face the keyboard and mouse, so you absolutely need to buy a boom arm. By using Boom arm, pop filter and shock mount, you can reduce the background noise. You must also position the mic around 4-8 inches in front of your mouth, this is the golden number of condenser microphone distance. You must also connect the 3.5mm audio jack into headphones, never play games through your speaker. Make sure your studio room filled with furniture and carpeted floor to prevent echo appearing each time you speak

Besides positioning, you can also use software to reduce background noise. OBS filter and NVIDIA RTX voice are the go-to go solution for a streamer that wants less keyboard noise and clearer sound. Keep in mind both OBS filter and NVIDIA RTX voice will reduce your sound volume and make it flatter, so you need to decide if you need software editing or not.

Razer Seiren X audio quality

Razer Seiren X audio quality is average. Not amazing, but not bad. The clarity of audio captured from Razer Seiren X is clear, so listeners can listen to your recorded voice clearly. This mic is sufficient for streaming, podcasting and beginner song recording. You can improve the audio quality by change the correct setting for Razer Seiren X. Open Windows sound control settings and change recording quality to 2 channel, 16 bit, 48000 Hz and DVD Quality.

Razer Seiren X captures the front noise strongly so you need to adjust your volume. Besides capturing the front volume, it will also capture the background noise. Because Razer Seiren X uses a supercardioid pattern, it will capture any noise within the side area of the mic. Many streamers face a problem that their mic captures the noise of mouse click and keyboard noise. It will be even worse if you use a mechanical keyboard with a loud switch put into it (Blue Cherry MX).

I recommend spending money on a good boom arm, pop filter and shock mount to improve the experience using this microphone and reduce the background noise. With the long USB cable and boom arm, you can place the Razer Seiren X anywhere. If you stream using OBS, use the OBS filter to filter background noise. If you really love mechanical keyboard and can’t part away with it, choose a silent switch like Red Cherry MX and Silver Cherry MX or if you really can’t part away with the click sensation on the blue switches, choose Brown Cherry MX which have the balance between click sensation and noise.

Average audio quality is to be expected within this price range. Even the best budget USB microphone, Audio Technica AT2020+ USB only a have little better audio quality than Razer Seiren X. If you really want to get better audio quality, you need to spend more on a better mic and learn how to setup xlr mic. For beginner streamers and podcasters, buying an expensive sound system is useless. It’s better to spend your money on advertisements and improve the number of your audience. A budget microphone that costs less than $200 is enough and Razer Seiren X at this pricetag a good choice if you want a good mic with cheap price. No matter what, spending money on microphone will be always better than relying on your headset and headphone built-in mic or even your laptop mic which only targeted to capture the sound into loudest volume, without any function to capture clear sound needed for recording and streaming

Now we compare Razer Seiren X with the others microphone product that Razer released

Razer Seiren X vs Razer Seiren Mini

Razer Seiren Mini
Razer Seiren Mini

Razer Seiren Mini launched just at 2020, so it is a new product by Razer. Cost less than half of Razer Seiren X, it aims to capture the market of best cheapest gaming and streaming microphone. But with its price, many things are sacrificed

Why Razer Seiren X is better than Razer Seiren Mini

  • Razer Seiren Mini doesn’t have a headphone jack, so you can’t monitor your sound unlike Razer Seiren X
  • Razer Seiren Mini is too small and has bad ergonomic compared with Razer Seiren X which is balanced between portability and function

With half the price, and some non-essential features removed, you got almost all the functionality of Razer Seiren X on Razer Seiren Mini. It has the same 16-bit depth and maximum 48 kHz sample rate. It’s even also had the same internal shock mount. I don’t recommend buying this microphone because Razer Seiren X always sold at a discount so the price difference is not worth enough to save money by buying Razer Seiren Mini.

Razer Seiren X Vs. Razer Seiren Elite

Razer Seiren Elite 2020 Revision
Razer Seiren Elite 2020

Unlike Razer Seiren Mini which launched as the budget counterpart, Razer Seiren Elite is the upgraded version of Razer Seiren X. The product was updated in 2020, so buying the new Razer Seiren Elite 2020 will give you better performance and you will experience less bug compared to the previous version of the product

Is Razer Seiren Elite a better choice than Razer Seiren X?

  • It has the gain knob to adjust microphone gain which missing in Razer Seiren X. But Gain knob usually only needed in dynamic Microphone and no surprise that Razer Seiren Elite is a dynamic microphone. The advantage of Razer Seiren X is it will capture less background sound and noise and better clarity and less distortion
  • Razer makes a questionable decision by using a cardioid pattern instead of a super cardioid. It will capture noise from the side of the Razer Seiren Elite. The advantage is, it’s good for podcasting, especially if you podcast more than 2 persons. But this will be bad for streaming, but the nature of dynamic mic is they will capture less keyboard and mouse noise and the mic position must be placed near the mouth because it captures less sound volume than condenser unless you increase the gain, so maybe Razer already anticipate it
  • Only have window software version. Some users reported that they still can use the mic in Mac. But take it with a grain of salt because you shouldn’t risk buying an unsupported product for your hobby or business. It will be a waste of time and money. There still many mikes that support Mac natively like Audio Technica AT202020+ USB and Blue Yeti.
